Kudos to Gaia for being named #1 in Complex‘s “50 Greatest Street Artists Right Now” list. And he’s not there just for his talent — have you seen the mural he made for us? — but for efforts like Open Walls Baltimore.
Says one commenter: “I don’t know anyone doing street art right now who has a better appreciation for intricate the social and political impacts of public art and street art.”
We couldn’t have described him better ourselves.

Our man Miles Gray was in The Netherlands recently and learned about Mediamatic’s aquaponics project. What’s the idea?
Aquaponics is a sustainable, recirculating ecosystem for food production made up of fish, microorganisms and vegetables. The fish feed the plants and the plants clean the water the fish swim in.
In a word, it’s supercool. Learn more about it here.

On July 12, Belvedere Vodka Global Ambassador and Master Mixologist Claire Smith (love that last name!) visited us for an evening of top-notch cocktailing. Local musician Rocky Wilson offered a lo-fi live set, while DJ duo Champion Superior Soundsystem kept the evening going with sophisticated beats. In addition, guests enjoyed checking out fashions and style advice from D.C. up-and-comers Style Me Elise, Hugh & Crye, SAINTCHiC, The Good Kin, and UnTietled.

On July 11, Bulleit Bourbon founder Tom Bulleit and Master of Whiskey Ewan Morgan visited Smith Commons for an evening of conversation and education on brown spirits. Ewan and Tom presented and discussed three whiskeys, which attendees sampled, while Chef Kamal Chanaka offered up a menu of bourbon-inspired dishes for everyone to enjoy. As you can see from the image gallery below (all photos courtesy of Rocky Wilson), a young crowd was eager to sample bourbon and rye and learn more from these masters.
Dining In DC has a great roundup of the event, plus a followup conversation with Tom Bulleit. Check it out.
